The installation of modern and sustainable bus shelters is underway in North Tyneside, as Clear Channel breaks ground on replacing existing bus shelters at various locations across the borough.

This upgrade will increase comfort and convenience for passengers whilst supporting the council’s ongoing commitment to reducing carbon emissions.

The new partnership between Clear Channel and North Tyneside Council will see approximately one-third of bus shelters in the region renewed at no cost to the council. Clear Channel will install and maintain the renewed shelters as well as manage advertising space for commercial use. A fraction of the revenue generated from shelter advertising will provide guaranteed income to the council. Other bus shelters in the borough continue to be maintained by Nexus on behalf of the council.

Living Roofs will also be fitted to some of the renewed bus shelters which will enhance biodiversity and contribute to the council’s climate change ambitions. These bus shelters will feature plant-covered roofs, creating a mini habitat for pollinators such as bees, butterflies, and other insects.

The modern design of these shelters will help to highlight public transport as an appealing option for residents and help encourage people in the borough to choose sustainable travel options.

Cllr Hannah Johnson, Cabinet Member for Environment, said: ‘These new bus shelters mark an exciting step forward in making public transport more appealing and accessible for people across North Tyneside. Not only will they enhance the passenger experience, but the Living Roofs will help us in our efforts to protect the environment. We’re committed to ensuring our borough remains a great place to live, work, and visit, and highlighting greener travel options is a key part of that.”

Will Ramage, Managing Director at Clear Channel, said: “We look forward to working with North Tyneside Council, delivering modern, sustainable bus shelters that enhance the passenger experience while supporting their environmental goals. By incorporating features like Living Roofs, these shelters go beyond providing a practical waiting space—they contribute to biodiversity, improve urban aesthetics, and align with the council’s climate ambitions. As a long-term partner to communities across the UK, Clear Channel is committed to delivering high-quality, sustainable infrastructure that benefits both residents and the environment. We look forward to seeing these new shelters play a role in encouraging greener travel choices in North Tyneside.”

North Tyneside Council declared a climate emergency in 2019 and has since set out ambitions to work towards being carbon net-zero by 2030 – twenty years ahead of the Government’s target.
