Doncaster
Doncaster is a city in South Yorkshire with a population of around 110,000. Named after the River Don, Doncaster is the administrative centre of the larger City of Doncaster metropolitan borough which has a population of over 300,000 (the largest metropolitan borough in the UK).
Doncaster is renowned for its horseracing heritage with records of established horse races dating back as far as 1595. The Doncaster Racecourse is the oldest centre for horse racing in Britain and Doncaster hosts two of the world’s oldest horse races: The Doncaster Cup and the St Leger Stakes.
Doncaster boasts local attractions of all kinds from Doncaster Minster (a grade I listed building built in 1854) to the Yorkshire Wildlife Park which is home to the only polar bears in the UK.
Doncaster has long been an industrial centre becoming a hub of enterprise during the industrial revolution. During this time, the Great Northern Railway founded the Doncaster Locomotive and Carriage Building Works that would famously build the iconic Flying Scotsman and Mallard trains. Today, Doncaster continues in its industrious traditions with a local economic output of £5.2 billion per year supported by 8,800 businesses.
Doncaster is very much a city on the up. Having recently been granted city status as part of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Civic Honours, Doncaster is also undergoing a major city centre rejuvenation project that is set to transform the way Doncaster looks including a picturesque waterfront marina area in the city centre.
