Newark-upon-Trent is a market town in the Newark and Sherwood district of Nottinghamshire. The town has a population of around 40,000 people whilst the Newark and Sherwood district is home to around 120,000 residents. Newark’s history as a major 18th Century trading centre can be felt when visiting the town’s striking Georgian market square which acts as a focal point for the town centre. One of Newark’s main attractions, the Town Hall Museum and Art Gallery, is a stunning Georgian building that displays exhibitions on English civic history as well as fine art pieces too. Within the town square, there are regular markets held which are popular amongst locals and visitors alike. From within the marketplace, the spire of the Church of St. Mary Magdalene can be seen towering over the market stalls. This church is a Grade I listed building and boasts one of the tallest church spires in the country.
Weaving through the town centre’s Georgian streets there is a wealth of high-street shops, cafes and bars. Away from the town centre, one of Newark’s most striking attractions is the 12th Century Newark Castle which stands along the banks of the River Trent. The castle is a Grade I listed building and was a significant institution throughout English history. It was a royalist stronghold during the English Civil War enduring three sieges before royalists later surrendered.
